Manchester United FC History
Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United or the Red Devils is an English team based at Old Trafford Stadium. The team has played a major role in the world of football both at home and in Europe. Currently, it has at least 330 million fans from all parts of the world and it has also been named the richest of all world football clubs.
Man United was formed in the 19th Century-1878. Then, it was called the Newton Health L &YR. The team catered for the Yorkshire Railway depot and Lancashire regions. The name was changed to Newton Health FC in 1892, when it joined the football league. Despite being the richest today, back in 1902, it was almost bankrupt with debts amounting to over 2,500 pounds. It was saved from bankruptcy by the director of Manchester Breweries J.H. Davis who later became the club’s chairman. This led to further changes in the club. It became to be known as Manchester United. This new identity was born on the 26th of April 1902. The cub colors were also changed from gold and green to white and red. On that same year, it finished on the second division position 5. Come the next season, they finished 3rd and in 1906, it finished on the 8th poison in division one.
The team won its first league in 1909. This was after it took advantage of the banned Manchester City players whom they signed in. From then on, they became a very successful team. During the next season, they went ahead to win their first FA Charity Shield. This is the same year that they relocated to Old Trafford. The pioneering game to be played at the stadium was in 1910 of which they beat Liverpool FC 4-3. Their second league title was won in 1911; they last that they would since for the next 46 years. The club degenerated and in 1922, it was back to the second division. After the Second World War, the club’s coach, Matt Busby revolutionized it by signing in new and youthful players. In 1948, they won the FA Cup once again and in 1956, they won the League Cup. The Red Devils became the first team to compete for the European Cup in 1956 and managed to reach the semi finals. It’s during this same period that they recorded the biggest win; 10-0 against Belgium.
A major hit to the club happened in 1958 when a plane carrying the players crashed and left 8 of them dead and 15 injured. Ten years later in 1968, it made a great mark on the English football by winning the European football. Consistent winning became predominant from the 1980’s. It won the FA cups in 1983 and ’85 and also won their first 10 league guides during the season of 1985-86. Alex Ferguson took the club’s leadership in 1986. It was in 1999 that Manchester United competed for the FA Cup, Premier League and the Premiership under the managership of Sir. Alex Ferguson. Through him, Man United has won Premier leagues, FA Cups, League Cups, Champions’ League, Super Cup, Cup Winners Cup and International Cup; 9,5, 2,1,1,1,1, respectively.
